Hello love! Welcome back. This week’s post is a continuation of the series I started last week on the blog. The series is mainly to help beginners who are looking to start out their own makeup businesses! While last week’s post focused on the items that should be in a makeup kit, this week’s post will serve as a guideline to help you when shopping for these items!
In no particular order, let’s get straight into this!
- MAKE A LIST
This is the first and most important step! Make a list of the items you intend to purchase in order to avoid buying things you don’t necessarily need. Please be sure to read reviews on the items you wish to buy first. If you haven’t, please read last week’s post HERE
- HAVE A BUDGET
I remember when I started out makeup for the first time. Every money I had was used in buying makeup products! Although I don’t regret it, I wish I had a budget to control my spending ( because now, my shoe game is suffering!) Buying makeup can be a little bit overwhelming and I would advise you have a budget. Having a budget will help you know your limits when it comes to spending.
- KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE
This tip will be helpful when it comes to buying items like foundation, concealers and the rest. Before even making a list, you should know what type of skin you have, your undertone and the rest. With this, you can avoid buying a product then throwing it away because it’s too light or too dark.
- SPLURGE VS SAVE
You must not necessarily have all high end products in your kit. Remember, just because it is expensive doesn’t mean it’s the best for you! Some drugstore products are even better than some overpriced high end products! However, You can splurge on an item like foundation and save on items like lipsticks.
- TEST BEFORE BUYING
If possible, please make sure to test a product before handing over your money to the seller. Make sure to use natural lighting especially when it comes to foundation. The best place to test your foundation is on your jaw, not the back of your hand.
- CHECK OUT DIFFERENT SELLERS FIRST
I am very frugal and I like to do some comparative analysis before buying any product. Please make sure to buy from trusted retailers as there are a lot of fake products around, especially in the local markets! Another useful tip is looking out for sales. Almost every retailer is having one this month so please be sure to use this for your advantage.
Also, don’t be afraid to shop online as well! You would, sometimes, find products at a cheaper rate there (the two sites I can vouch for in Nigeria are JUMIA and KONGA) The only disadvantage is that you don’t get to see or test the product before hand.
Insufficient fund? No problem! You really don’t have to buy all the makeup products in the world! You can also make yours at home. For example, a matte brown eyeshadow (or contour powder) + clear gel (preferably eco styler gel) = eyebrow setting gel!! 😀 There are a lot of cool makeup DIYs on YouTube and other blogs- You’re only one search away!
In addition, a makeup item can serve more than one purpose. For example, you can use an eyeshadow that is two or three shades darker than your skin tone to contour! I have seen someone use a cream lipstick as a blush! If you haven’t already, you can read the top makeup tricks I have learnt over the years HERE!
I hope these tips (and the series in general) will be helpful enough to guide you. As I get more tips, I will be sure to update as time progresses. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to CONTACT ME. Also, if you have any useful tip as well, please share in the comment section below! Thanks love!
